What is Babyfino?

Babyfino is coming soon for iPhone and Android. A spare phone or tablet becomes the baby device in the child’s room, the parents listen on their own phones, and the sleep companion looks after the parent who falls asleep while putting the child to bed. Audio and video are end-to-end encrypted, so not even Babyfino’s server can listen in, though it does see metadata such as connection times. Babyfino needs an internet connection on both devices – without one it does not work, not even in the same room. It is not a medical device and does not monitor breathing or movement.

What should you check in any baby monitor app?

  • Encryption: Does the vendor say whether audio and video pass its servers, and whether they are end-to-end encrypted?
  • Storage and uploads: What is recorded, is it kept on the device or on a server, and when is it deleted?
  • Account: Does the app need one, and which personal data does it ask for?
  • Connection loss: Does the app tell you when the device in the child’s room drops out, and how quickly?
  • Your phones: Does it run on every phone that should listen, iPhone and Android alike? See old phone as baby monitor.
  • Price model: A trial, a subscription or a one-time purchase – and for how many devices?
  • Privacy labels: The privacy details in the app stores are the vendors’ own statements; Apple notes on every app page that it has not verified them [1].
